Chapter Thirty

The first stop Diaz made upon entering the Northeast Precinct of the East Hollywood Police Department was on the fifth floor. Using her badge, and the voice she normally reserved for interrogations, she explained to the captain that she needed to speak with one of his detectives immediately.

The captain, a ruddy, overweight man with a bulbous nose and watery blue eyes at first bristled at the directive. His response was so intense, so instantaneous, that Diaz figured it had more to do with a decades-old jurisdictional pissing match between the LAPD and her agency, than it did with what she was actually asking.

The decision to start with him wasn’t one she was overly fond of, though she didn’t have much choice in the matter. Despite her clearance as a federal agent, she was still a visiting law enforcement officer who owed the ranking command the respect of informing him of her presence and the reason for it.

Apparently, the captain was not of the same opinion about such pleasantries.

Not until she turned and closed the door, did he stop objecting long enough to hear what she was telling him. As a federal agent, she had full authority to speak with whomever she wanted. Given that the nature of her questions were related to why a member of his precinct was keeping tabs on multiple suspects in connection with a major investigation, any further obstruction he presented would reflect on him personally and every other employee inside the building, making them all susceptible to a visit from Internal Affairs.

Under different circumstances, if there wasn’t a witness right now in hiding, if she hadn’t called in an enormous favor to keep that witness safe, if she had been to bed in the previous two days, she might have considered playing nice.

Not today.

Once the full litany of her not-so-thinly-veiled threats was laid out, she leaned back in her chair. She watched the color drain from the captain’s face, saw his mouth work up and down a few times in hopes of stringing together a retort that never materialized.

In the end, the encounter concluded with nothing more than a weak, “Detective Gomez is on the second floor.”

“Thank you,” Diaz replied, standing and letting herself out, Lefranc following her as she bypassed the elevator and took the stairs. Bounding down two at a time, she felt her stomach begin to churn, thinking of what lay ahead.

She’d had more than an hour to devise the best way to approach the ensuing conversation, though she still wasn’t entirely certain what that was. There existed no doubt that Paulo Gomez had flagged multiple people in the system. From what she could tell, there was no reason for him to be doing it, most of his cases of the white collar variety, the addresses for Ortega and Peroux both well outside his purview.

The only thing that did seem to match so far was the personnel record for Gomez, revealing a connection she would not be afraid to exploit if necessary.
